Why LiDAR is the Next Level of Physical Security

May 19, 2021  |  GeraldBecker

Managing physical security is an ever-growing challenge. Monitoring and controlling access and other security measures is a critical requirement in government institutions, public venues, transportation centers, border gateways, businesses, and other locations. The ability for management and security teams in these facilities to manage security efficiently can go a long way towards avoiding incidents.

Traditional security systems feature a series of cameras feeding to a central monitoring station and video management platform. But, these solutions on their own leave facilities at risk due to limitations of camera-only systems, including false alarms, visibility, tracking, environmental factors, and the simple challenge of monitoring a large number of cameras manually.

But, what if you could enhance your security technology by adding complementary technology that can not only maximize the value of your existing tools, but give you much more data to create a better overall security landscape in the process?

That’s what you get with LiDAR.

LiDAR sensors emit light beams in all directions, creating a 360-degree field of view without being impacted by environmental conditions and can identify and classify objects, along with their location and movement with extremely high accuracy.

Data from LiDAR sensors is passed through a 3D perception software platform that labels each object, classifies it, and tracks it in real time as it moves across the sensor network using automated handover feature, and determines when there may be a security risk. By assigning a unique identifier to each object that enters a space, the LiDAR system is able to monitor risk without any privacy concerns because the LiDAR sensors can identify the object, but no identifying characteristics.

Automating the process saves resources while creating a much more accurate process, and the 3D perception layer adds a new level of intelligence to the sensor data, enabling the system to more efficiently and accurately identify threats while reducing false alarms.

But here’s the kicker. Adding a LiDAR solution to your security system doesn’t reduce the value of your investment in cameras. In fact, it only increases it.

LiDAR systems, like Quanergy’s M Series sensors with QORTEX DTC perception software, can integrate with many video management systems and leverage rich, 3D object data to automate and enhance video-based systems to protect any facility. The sensors allow security teams to immediately pinpoint the location and movement of any potential security threats, and out-of-the-box integration with video systems enables seamless automation of other security resources.

For instance, when the LiDAR sensors detect a security anomaly, the system can activate the appropriate camera(s) and alert security teams, who don’t have to search for the right camera. Instead, the feed can be automatically placed on their main monitors. Integration with the VMS also means PTZ cameras can automatically be positioned, reducing time, effort, and error. It also means fewer cameras may be needed because they can be automatically repositioned to areas of interest. Between the LiDAR sensors and automated camera positioning, security teams can easily track and monitor any potential threats.

When combined with a VMS platform, all the security information – LiDAR sensor data, video footage, and information from other resources like access systems – can be combined into a single resource and managed from a single platform. The ability to monitor and manage all the data and monitor dynamic situations automatically from a single unified platform reduces the burden on security personnel while providing more accurate and timely information on which to act.

MQ-8 LiDAR Sensor paired with QORTEX DTC™ perception software has an accuracy of 95%, and increase the efficiency of security response as it reduces the false alarms rate by 84%.
