Company selected as finalist in the 2022 Recovery and Environmental Sustainability Challenge

We’ll be putting our LiDAR-based solutions to the test in the coming weeks with New York City’s public transportation authorities– as part of a global competition calling for technologies to improve public transit safety and meet clean energy objectives.
As one of the finalists in the Transit Tech Lab’s latest COVID-19 Recovery and Environment Sustainability Challenge, Quanergy will test its solutions over an eight-week period with two transit agencies in New York: the Metro North Railroad and NYC Transit.
The first COVID-19 Response Challenge, launched in 2020 by the MTA and Transit Innovation Partnership, led to eight productive collaborations with the MTA, the Port Authority and NJ TRANSIT. This year’s challenge focused on both recovery and environmental sustainability.
Our submission: track intrusion detection
For this challenge, we’re focusing on track intrusion detection using our MQ-8/QORTEX DTC (Detect, Track, Classify) solution, which enables reliable, real-time people and vehicle tracking in security, smart city, and smart space applications. QORTEX DTCtm is the brains of our Flow Management Platform, generating rich data that includes location, direction, speed, and type of objects detected.

With these capabilities, New York City’s regional transportation agencies will gain deeper insights into travel patterns, which they can use to streamline crew scheduling, optimize staffing across operations and help deter track intrusions.
A track record of success
At Quanergy, we work closely with cities, municipalities, and organizations around the world on LiDAR-based solutions that improve the efficiency and safety of citizens – and make smart spaces and connected environments more efficient. Our 3D LiDAR Flow Management solution has been successfully deployed by The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency to reduce traffic delays. Working with our partners at TNL, our pilot project reduced travel time per light rail by 66 seconds – resulting in a travel time reduction of 16%
With our partner Parifex, our 3D LiDAR solutions are also being used by the French Ministry of Interior in France for highway speed monitoring and enforcement.
In Busan, South Korea, our technology is being used to collect and analyze traffic data, including the walking direction of pedestrians, their traffic volume and the number of speeding vehicles. This information is then used by city officials to better understand traffic patterns and predict safety hazards. Prior to deploying Quanergy solutions, the city relied on manual data collection methods – which are notoriously error-prone and labor-intensive. Elsewhere in South Korea, Quanergy has worked with partner iCent in Seoul to make school zones safer.
Heeding the call
Our nation’s transportation systems are essential services – but most were designed for an era with far less people and far fewer vehicles. What worked 20 or 30 years ago isn’t going to suffice for today and tomorrow. Initiatives like the Transit Tech Lab’s Recovery and Environmental Sustainability Challenge provide a new opportunity to re-think how to improve these vital transportation systems using modern technology. We’re honored to be among the finalists of this challenge, and we look forward to being able to show the results of our proof-of-concept in the coming weeks.
